*There are traditions and regulations for wearing your cap and gown: The correct way to wear your cap is with the top part level (a marble would not fall off). The tassel goes to the right front. If the gown needs pressing, use a cool iron. Flowers and other adornments except honor cords are not to be worn with or on caps and gowns. That means no messages to mom!

*The commencement exercise will be held in the Chiles Center at the University of Portland at 2:00 pm. Doors will open at 1:00 pm. Graduates will enter in the North entrance (zones 6 and 7), off Portsmouth Street (opposite side of your parents). Put on your cap and gown in the North Lobby. Line up starts at 1:15 pm.

*The Valedictorians, Salutatorians and class officers will lead the two rows in. Remember whom you stand by in line-ups and be sure you occupy the proper chair or you may get the wrong diploma. When you reach your place after the processional, remain standing until Mr. Wernsing asks you to be seated.

*For the presentation of diplomas your row will stand (all others will remain seated), then walk through doors on the side of the stage. Behind the stage, you will wait behind a curtain, then cross the stage as your name is read. (We will practice this.) Faculty will lead your row to the doors. Each successive row will then stand when half the students from the previous row have returned to their seats. Names will alternate from side-to-side until each side of a row is finished. Please be seated as you return to your place.

*AFTER THE CEREMONY YOU MAY MEET WITH YOUR FAMILIES.

Dear Loyal Mustang Men and Women:

In honor of your accomplishment of reaching Graduation from MHS, we wish to throw you a party. This all-night celebration is to be strictly free from any drugs, alcohol or tobacco products. Prior to boarding the buses and while at the event, students and their bags may be subject to search. Any student found to be in the possession of or under the influence of any alcohol, tobacco or other drugs will be immediately removed and sanctioned up to and including police involvement. Please don’t make a poor choice and do something that will tarnish your moment to celebrate this accomplishment. Inappropriate behavior of any kind between now and graduation will be subject to exclusion from graduation ceremonies. We have faith you will make the right choices. Congratulations on your high school graduation!

Sincerely,

Kelly Carlisle on behalf of your MHS faculty, staff and parents.

Notes to parents:

*Doors will open for parents and guests at 1:00pm.

*Seating is first come, first served. Please do not save blocks of seats. There are reserved sections roped off for elderly, wheelchairs and disabled. The tier behind the stage will be closed.

*Some thoughts for your consideration as members of the audience:

Please discourage friends and relatives from bringing small children. Graduation is the culmination of twelve years of education and should be a quiet time of reflection upon the achievements of each graduate. Loud yelling, whistling, leaving your seat and standing in front of other guests detracts from the ceremony as well as interfere with the next name being read. Please to not leave your seat once the ceremony has started unless absolutely necessary! Please be courteous during speeches and solos. Please do not leave your seats after the ceremony until the all students have completed the recessional Let’s encourage proper guest behavior to ensure a memorable graduation for all!

*You may park in the main lot and enter through the main entrance (South side). Please do not park on the streets by the campus.

*A photographer will be provided and will take a picture of graduates receiving their diploma. Proofs will be mailed home, from which you may order if you would like prints made. Parents do not need to get up from their seats to take pictures.
